66Louis Armstrong & Fats Domino Two Great New Orleans Musicians
At age 81, Fats Domino recently played what was billed as his last concert, a Katrina fundraiser for own neighborhood, the 9th Ward in New Orleans. The concert at Tipintina's in New Orleans was broadcast Feb. 22 as a PBS one hour special. Fats' songs were interspersed with comments by his friends, and admirers. They provided a wonderful story of Fats' remarkable career and his great influence on R & B and rock music.

Last month I was entranced by the PBS fund raising promotional concert featuring eleven-year-old child prodigy singer, Jackie Evancho (pronounced evanko). My granddaughter Nora's third birthday was coming up soon, and I was pretty sure she would like the video; so I responded to PBS's invitation to make a contribution and receive a copy of the Jackie Evancho concert video.

Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton was born in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1926. As was the case with many outstanding blues singers, Thorton got started singing in the Baptist church where her father was minister. Her recording of Hound Dog rose quickly to the top of the R&B chart and made her a star, but it earned her little money. Several years later, Elvis Presly made a hit recording of the song.
