Paul Robeson, An Amazing American, Sings

A Truly Amazing American

Paul Robeson was an amazing American, son of a former slave, multi-talented, multi-dimensional and courageous in acting on his convictions. A precursor of Joe Louis, Jackie Robinson, Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods, he starred in four sports and was a two-time All American football player at Rutgers and class valedictorian; he was a classmate of William O. Douglas at Columbia Law School, an intellectual, a fighter for civil rights and a Broadway stage actor, including the title role in Eugene O'Neill's "Emperor Jones." Perhaps he's best known today for his renditions of Negro spirituals like "Old Man River," "Go Down Moses" and the like. He was the first to bring these songs to the concert stage. He also sang in several foreign languages. His career pretty much came to an end when he was labeled a subversive by the McCarthy Committee as a result of his visits to the Soviet Union and favorable comments about it's government.
