Talk 910 KNEW announced that notorious right wing talk show host Michael Savage was jerked this week:
"Why did you take Michael Savage off the air?"
Here's your no-spin direct answer; we have decided to go in a different
philosophical and ideological direction, featuring more contemporary content and
more local information.
The Savage Nation does not fit into that vision.
Savage had previously been fired by MSNBC TV for homophobic remarks to a caller.
Savage has been vocally opposed to illegal immigration; a supporter of the English only movement and argues that liberalism is corrupting America. He calls himself a conservative nationalist.

I'm not familiar with his work. I'm also not big on axing free speech unless there is a really good reason for it. I might disagree but I believe the guy has a right to his opinion. Hilarious. Clear channel has cut their own throat by axing the 3rd most popular talk show host on radio. It's not like Savage won't find a new radio home, and his audience will go with him. 910 KNEW and Clear Channel are the biggest losers in this move, as I'm sure they know. But in this era of politically correct nice-nice talk, I suppose it's better to lose money and stand up for imaginary principles than it is to support controversial talk that is, of course, the true reason why we have a 1st Amendment. I hope I someday meet the ignoramuses who run that station so I can get a good laugh at their expense.
Storytellersus, there is an important distinction between a commercial radio station deciding to drop one of their talk show hosts for reasons best known to them and the government denying someone's first amendment rights. The radio station has every right to determine its own programming within the parameters established by the Federal Communications Commission. If the station believes an FCC rule violates its First Amendment rights it can contest the rule in court.

I was happy to see MSNBC axe Imus, but I was quite upset when they axed Phil O'Donohue because of his opposition to the invasion of Iraq. That was a much more serious and wrong decision than axing Savage and Imus, in my opinion.

It has NOTHING to do with Michael Savage's right to a job on KNEW or anywhere else.

You were happy to see Savage silenced and I was happy to see both Imus and Savage axed. But NBC's decision to take Phil O'Donohue off the air because of his opposition to the invasion of Iraq was a more serious instance of censorship, in my opinion. He was silenced for not being PC about a huge, costly government foreign policy decision. However as Jexter says, the decision did not involve the first amendment unless it could be proved that he was silenced by Bush administration. Come to think of it, he probably was. GE is a big defense contractor.
The Don Imus morning radio show moves its television home to the Fox Business Network starting Oct. 5 - where his fans should know they will be sharing him on-screen with a whole lot of numbers.
The radio show itself will continue to be heard 6 a.m.-10 a.m. daily on WABC (770 AM), the flagship of a syndication network that includes about 65 stations.
Well, I hope he's learned to clean up his act. By the way, Jexter, in Imus's case was not a matter of political correctness but rather moral correctness. I learned that in the second grade not far from where you grew up. Apparently you were not so fortunate.

Good hub Ralph. I must say that I agree with Storytellersus. I don't believe in stifling anyones right to free speech either. However, unlike Storytellersus, I am familiar with Michael Savage, and the 'savage nation'(Shudder). usually I can only listen for a couple of minutes before I start screaming at the radio though, Then I perform my own act of censorship, and switch the channel.

My understanding of the right to free speech doesn't include the right to say outrageous things on the public airwaves, or at least it doesn't require the radio or TV stations to keep them on the payroll. Savage can exercise his free speech in a public park, write another book or get another talk station to hire him.

I believe that if you look into it, you'll see that radio stations--like television stations--make their decisions about programming based mostly on ratings.
Michael Savage's program is enormously successful and popular, even in the hard-left loony zone of Northern California. To axe the #3 most popular host on radio automatically makes the radar go bleeeep!! Can't say it was about ratings, can they? Nope.
But Savage has been often besieged by the radicals in San Fran. They've tried to get him off the air for years now. Yes, the station has every right to take him down, but let's not pretend it was about anything but the PC police taking their case to 910 KNEW. KNEW caved, and as a society we're worse off for it, as will be KNEW when they lose a great many listeners.
Radio station programming is affected greatly by ratings. However, as in the cases of Imus and Savage (I've never heard him) the stations or their advertisers may decide that objectionable comment is not consistent with the image they want to project to the public. Content which is offensive to minority groups (e.g, African Americans, gays) with significant numbers and buying power discourages off commercials from consumer products companies. Imus went over the line with his comments about the African American women on the Rutgers basketball team. Hate speech doesn't sell ads, except for Confederate flags, Nazi regalia and the like, even though it may attract a lot of viewers.
I have nothing against reasoned arguments from opposing viewpoints. I'm sure the conservative base could win more support for some of their issues if they tried it more often. It's the outrageous lies, hate language, willful misunderstandings and purposeful misrepresentations that I think are damaging to the American viewpoint. Both our own and others. Frankly, you cannot blame people for thinking conservatives in America are crazy when so many of them put themselves and the conservative issues forth in these unethical ways.
That's my reasoned comment. My smartie comment is that he'll probably end up on Fox and gain a larger audience.

Last summer, a gunman entered the Unitarian Church in Knoxville, TN. He killed 2 people before he was wrestled to the ground (good thing for him I wasn't there).
His stated goal was to kill liberals.
He had a copy of a book by Michael Savage, titled "Liberalism is a Mental Disease", as well as some other conservative writers. I'm sure he was a regular Savage listener as well.
The vile hatred that Savage spews should not be on the air, anywhere. It is not a "counter" to anything - it is hate filled, disgusting nonsense.
I don't care if it's healthy. Do you think it's healthy for Savage to tell a gay caller to get aids and die? To call liberalism a mental disorder?

I agree that at times Savage seemed logical and some of his observations were pretty right on. For the past year he has gone off the deep end with ACORN and Banned in Britian, his books are dribble and I do not understand how he insults the people listening to him and no one seems to "get it". However if Savage was silenced due to what he was saying, I believe that this is wrong.
Do you also feel it was wrong to silence Don Imus for calling the all-black Rutgers girls basketball team "nappy headed ho's?" Seems to me the owners have a perfect right to determine the programming on their radio or TV station. I've never heard Savage, but he reportedly has made equally offensive remarks about gays and other groups. He has no right under the law to be allowed to continue making offensive remarks on the air. The things he and Imus and others have said on the air are, in my opinion, much more offensive than the occasional four letter word or bare breast which the FTC makes such a fuss about.

20 years ago I worked for several radio stations and ratings were everything. Many personalities were replaced and moved to different time slots based on Abriton ratings.
Any company has the right to terminate an employee based on that companies values, but some in radio, and other media have sacrificed for the love of money, ie: Howard Stern. But Savage, a little over the top even for me, has the right to say whatever he likes, just not on certain radio stations. I also think it was wrong for the Uk to ban him and put him on the terror list given the fact that they allow so many other terrorist in.
I don't care how old this is. I am just glad to know that it happened. That man was a psychopath. We have to do something about psychopathy in the field of talk radio.
