Weapons Enthusiast Takes Aim at Dem Candidates
Jered Townsend is a single, 30-year-old gun enthusiast in who lives north of Flint, Michigan, on a rural road with his parents and his baby.
Well, "baby" is his way of putting it. He doesn't have children.
As America learned Monday in the Dem candidate debate, Townsend's "baby" is a Bushmaster AR15 semiautomatic rifle, all black and polished and pretty.
He does like his weapons.
"It'a just my hobby, you know?" the proud owner of "11 or 12" guns and a concealed weapons permit said Tuesday afternoon.
The view of U.S. Sen. Joe Biden was that Townsend "needs help."
Townsend's mom said "He likes shooting. He's very proud of that gun."
Townsend said, "I got all kinds of stuff." "I have a 30-30 deer rifle...
couple of .22s, four pistols..a couple of shotguns.
Townsend said he doesn't carry a gun often, mostly around the holidays when he goes Christmas shopping when the "stores are packed and you know you got cash on you. Anything can happen anywhere."

If the Democrats get their way the 2nd Amendment will go Aout the window. We as American's have the Right to Keep and Bare Arms. The Democrats have so many citizens so brainwashed...their idea of an "assault style weapon" is anything that looks like the AR-15. None of the public is anywhere allowed to have a FULLY Automatic weapon (A.K.A. Assault weapon) - Those are for use ONLY in the military.

Actually Lady Valerian, you are incorrect... It is legal to own full automatic weapons as long as you... a. get it registered with BATFE and pay the 200 dollar tax stamp... and b. live in a state where it is legal to own said firearm.
I agree with the rest of what you said.
The Supreme Court will soon decide an important case on the right of states or cities (Washington, DC, to regulate or prohibit firearms. I read an op-ed by a Duke Law School professor who opined that the Court will or should rule that states have the right to adopt reasonable regulations on the ownership and use of firearms under the Second Amendment of the Constitution.

Barranca please take the time to research subjects before you comment on them. I'm very similar to Mr. Townsend in regards to gun onwership. The problem with America today is mis-informed people like yourself assuming that people who like to own a gun (or a million guns) are not the norm and that they are dangerous or need psyciatric attention. As a matter of fact I think something like 75% of all households in America have at least one gun. Furthermore, If you think banning gun ownership is even a possibility then you should probably invest in a good WWII documentary. It will show you what will happen to you. The only difference is that no goverment on earth is going to come and fight the US government on behalf of US citizens. No other government has the you-know-whats to pull something like that off. The reason America was able to go into Europe, Asia, and Africa and come out victoriously is because we were comprised of people who knew the importance of individual gun ownership. Trust me, you don't want guns to be banned.

Consider these examples. In Alabama, a man who had been committed to mental institutions at least twice killed two police officers with a rifle he bought on Christmas Eve. In Texas, a woman hospitalized five times bought a shotgun at a Wal-Mart and killed herself. In New York, a schizophrenic shot and killed a priest and parishioner during Mass.
And yet since 2002, Congress has failed to pass legislation requiring states to give the FBI a list of people who should not be able to buy weapons because of mental illness.
Federal law prohibits the sale of guns to the mentally ill, but if their names are not in a database for background checks, the law has no teeth. Gun dealers don’t know they are selling weapons to people who are very likely to harm themselves or others because their names are not in the database.
It’s even more ludicrous that much of the opposition comes from people who call themselves mental health advocates. Michael Faenza, president and chief executive of the National Mental Health Association, told The Associated Press that the names of the mentally ill should not be put in a background-check database.
“It’s just not fair,” he said. “On the one hand, we want there to be very limited access to guns. But here you’re singling out people because of a medical condition …”
Yeah. That’s the point. Does he really believe it’s fair to hand a weapon to a suicidal person? That’s some pretty rough medicine.
Fortunately, Virginia is not among the misguided states that think privacy is more important than safety when it comes to the mentally ill and guns.
It’s not like the average Joe can get a peek at the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. This is not a list that can be sold to direct mailers or telemarketers; it’s maintained by the FBI.
NICS was put in place in 1998 to replace a five-day waiting period for the purchase of a gun. Since then, more than 53 million background checks have been conducted and more than 850,000 sales have been denied, according to the FBI. Eighty-eight percent of those denied weapons had a criminal history.
The system is far from perfect, and critics argue that many people with criminal backgrounds have not been entered in the database. There is no doubt the system needs improvement, and one important way to improve it is to add the names of the mentally ill.
U.S. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-N.Y., whose husband was shot and killed on a Long Island Rail Road train in 1993, introduced legislation in 2002, along with Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., to close the gaps in the background check system, along with $250 million to do it.
The bill passed the House without opposition, but stalled in the Senate. It failed again in 2004 and is now stuck in a subcommittee in the House.
This legislation should have the support of all Americans, and the sooner it gets passed the better. There’s no way that arming a mentally ill person can be considered the fair - or right - thing to do. It’s not fair to people with the illnesses or anyone else they might harm.

I have a question; in MN they have the carry concealed law.
Everywhere you go in MN, like malls, grocery stores, etc....they have big signs posted that say:
"Carrying a concealed weapon is BANNED on these premises"
What I want to know is
a) Can they do that because they own the building? Like signs saying
"No shateboarding"
OR
b) is it just a bunch of BS as it is a state law AND what about if it were a Federal law - would there be a difference?

I think that property owners can prohibit weapons as can employers can prohibit bringing weapons into the workplace or even into company parking lots in the trunks of cars if they discover them. Joe Knollenberg is my congressman and one of the worst in Washington. His looney son is a state representative who has proposed arming teachers in classrooms and other school employees.
