The Whitbread Cup, the Volvo Round the World Race and other long-distance ocean races have led to the development of much lighter and faster sailboats stitched together with epoxy, carbon fiber and other modern high tech materials. These boats are built for speed, as close to the limits of strength and safety as possible. They offer few crew comforts. Quite a number have failed to survive storm condidtions and dropped out. Several have sunk. But few lives have been lost.
