4-Ply Angel Soft Toilet Tissue Controversy in L.A.
Jennifer Steinhauer reports in today's (5-8-09) NY Times on a dust-up in California's Riverside County government over differences in the quality of toilet paper provided for the county's 10 elected officials and their staffs and the rest of the county's 18,500 employees.
Two years ago the county supervisor, in response to county employee complaints about the one-ply toilet paper provided in the county's 340 buildings, switched to two-ply toilet paper. This move brought joy in johns in offices around the county until employees discovered that the ten elected officials and their staffs, totalling 100, were being treated to "Angel Soft" 4-ply toilet tissue. It was not long before whistleblowing led to a sense of "toilet tissue inequity" which pervaded the workforce, and a revolt against the decision of the Facilities Management Department, following a "texture test," to provide executives, their staffs and guests with Angel Soft, 4-ply tissue. The ten percent pay cut taken by county employees contributed to the furor over executive toilet tissue. The county spent $280,000 on toilet paper in 2008. This amounted to approximately $15 per employee.

LOS ANGELES — The boom times brought many things to Riverside County government — revenues, jobs and enhanced comfort of a private sort. But like most places in America, times are tough, and four-ply toilet tissue must go.

LOL...good one
Is that in the category of wiping the slate clean?
You got me!
1. One-ply is counter economical anyway, since more layers are required.
2. Reminds me of our institution going the other direction a few years ago when brown paper towels were substituted for white at a purported large annual saving.
3. Are there any thoughts about the dis/advantages of cheap xerox and printer paper? What kind of printing paper does the executive suite use, anyway?

Funny yet a serious issue. Thanks for bringing this to our notice.
Does not our government and state offices have more to work on than fuss about about 1 ply or 2 ply tissue! Hell we as the citizens should be the ones fussing we are the ones paying for it out of our tax dollars!!

Thanks for this one - a good laugh. But with a serious side too. It's really no different from business class travel for senior grades.
